Now shorter - Shelf life of platelet concentrate
Platelets are an essential pharmaceutical in transfusion medicine. Their durability is short and the provision of sufficient quantity and quality is a challenge.
The current communication from the Paul-Ehrlich Institute suggests that, based on new scientific findings, the shelf life of untreated and untested platelet concentrates (PLTs) should be limited to a total of three instead of 4 days in order to reduce the risks of bacterial infection through transmission of PLTs. Scheduled implementation date is 01/01/2028.
The shelf life can still be prolonged to 5 days if there is a pathogen reduction procedure implemented or if testing for bacterial contamination is negative.
In order to smooth the transition to the future requirement profile of PLTs, we believe that regulatory case-by-case consideration, action definition, notification of changes, and timely implementation are the key to success.
Why should You participate?
To get info about the new requirements and their implementation and about the validation of a pathogen reduction procedure.
Who should participate?
The new requirements concern marketing authorization holders of PLTs, as change notifications may be necessary depending on the pathogen reduction methods used.
